HOBBIT HYPE: World Premiere

The world premier for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took place last night in Los Angeles, and Warner Bros broadcast it over the interwebs with a live stream. In case you missed it, the full 1 hour 18 minute long video is on YouTube and be found with this link:

While it wasn’t a hugely insightful video and the interviewers are your typical fake tanned, faux enthusiastic LA airbags, I watched it all anyway and have compiled a list the bits you may want to skip to:

A whole load of BS occurs for the first 20 minutes before the stars arrive, first to appear being Manu Bennett @20.30. Manu plays Azog the Defiler. What does he defile? Apart from J.R.R. Tolkien’s legacy, not much.

Next up @ 25.40 is Ed Sheeran, wearing high tops to accompany his suit and tie. Ed wrote the credits song ‘I See Fire’ for the second film, and it’s by far the weakest effort of any of the Middle-earth closers so far. Here’s that as well:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mllXxyHTzfg

Pretty lame and tonally jarring, especially compared to Neil Finn’s upbeat, catchy lonely mountain song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqnSoTgjBrg

Skip to 28.30 and Luke Evans aka Bard the Bowman. He’s from Sooth WALESSS!

The highlight comes @ 43.50 when Martin Freeman rolls up all chill, like an ice cube inside a freezer locked within a larger freezer at the bottom of a swimming pool filled with liquid nitrogen at a health spa in Greenland.

P.Jackson pops up for a bit at 50.00, and seems bored.

Go to 54.00 for Evangeline Lilly. Not only does her phony character Tauriel exist only to fill Arwen’s void, Lilly even LOOKS like Liv Tyler.

For Benny Cumberbatch, who voices both Smaug and The Necromancer in the new instalment, go to 59 minutes in.  He also does a funny face @ 1.14:25.

More brain frying BS for ten minutes or so before Stephen Fry turns up with a beard at 1.09. He will be appearing as the Master of Lake town in the new Hobbit film, in case you didn’t catch the interviewer saying it it twelve times.

Stephen Fry. He’s in The Hobbit. Look at him.

At the end there is a quick TV spot and some group photos and then it ends.

So overall, not hugely exciting stuff but enough to tide die hard fans over.

Now back to checking YouTube every 20 minutes for new Hobbit Production Diary Vlogs on Peter Jackson’s channel.  (Here’s the most recent in case you didn’t know about these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAJ_YCe4YsM)
